1. Can you introduce yourself?
Hello! My name is Georgia Diederichsen and I am a Brazilian lawyer currently living in Singapore. I moved to Asia in 2018 to pursue an LL.M. in International Business Law at Sorbonne-Assas and fell in love with the place. I currently work at a tech company in the ecommerce / marketplace aggregation space, in which I am able to navigate between legal and operations. I am also a member of the Alumni Association in Singapore and I am always happy to talk to candidates and students, walk them through life in Singapore and help them understand the possible career moves after an LL.M. Although I miss Brazil very much, I hope to continue calling Singapore my home for many years.
2. What is your current job?
I am currently a Senior Director / Legal Counsel at Shopmatic Group. I have multiple hats, being legal just one of them – I am also involved in operations, data privacy, corporate development, strategic partnerships, risk assessment and more. Every day is different, and boredom is definitely not in our vocabulary.
3. How has graduating from the LLM International Business Law enabled you to advance in your career?
I joined the program at a point in my career that I was becoming too specialized in areas like environmental law, corporate law and other ESG-related issues, and maybe neglecting the fact that there is much more out there. From an educational perspective, the LL.M. helped me update my (sometimes limited) knowledge of some things I had only seen during law school and gave me a good understanding of how the legal system works in the EU and in Singapore. From a “geographical” perspective, the LL.M. was invaluable for me to find a job in Singapore and create roots here. From an overall perspective, I always say that the LL.M. opens many doors and fosters opportunities that, if you put some effort and use it well, can take you to anywhere you want.
4. What are the reasons which made you choose to pursue the LL.M International Business Law delivered by Sorbonne-Assas International Law School?
In my opinion, one of the main highlights is that the program offers a good mixture of European, Singapore and international law, as well as optional modules beyond the legal scope that help you focus on a more practical side of the law. Apart from that, the program offered by Sorbonne-Assas in Singapore gives you access to the INSEAD campus and classes on topics that lawyers typically don’t have a lot of contact with like finance, marketing, accountancy and so on. The modules are taught by MBA professors and you can really leverage on their endless knowledge and experience. Finally, I really wanted to live in Asia and consolidate my career move. Thus, the location was non-negotiable to me!
